This is the manga series that I’ve recently been reading on my Manga Plus (by Shueisha) mobile app subscription.
What drew my attention to this was the very obviously standout poster-banner on the mobile app’s homepage and its name – War of the Adults. I decided to give it a try because 60+ chapters were available to read. I hate getting into a new manga series and be left hanging with just 2-10 chapters especially if it turned out to be an immersive fast paced story.
The protagonist of this story is Yutaro Urashima, a 15 year old delinquent, trying to grow up and follow his late father’s footsteps and become an upstanding adult of society. Things take a turn and he ends up in a coma after an accident and falls into a coma for 15 years and wakes up as a 30 year old!
His country is a vastly different place when he comes to and it is partly because of him. He wakes up to a George Orwell’s 1984 Big Brother is watching type of world, except it is one where everyone is watching everyone else all the time. Everyone is being streamed 24/7 and allowed to like/dislike/comment on your day to day life.
I don’t want to divulge more of the story and give away all the interesting spoilers. But this story is such an interesting concept although not new.
Now, why do I enjoy this story? Because our hero wakes in a 30-year old body with a 15-year old’s mind and sees only performative adults around him. He, who has been striving to be a good adult even when nobody is watching is now surrounded by adults who are only good because everybody is watching.
He sets out to change all that. That’s the premise of the story but I feel like I’ve already revealed more than I should have.
I’m really looking forward to the weekly chapter releases. The story is still good so far and I definitely highly recommend this.
